FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: 26 June 2025
Lagos, Nigeria

Theme: Beyond Commitments: Advancing Policies for Gender-Safe Media
Date: 4–5 December 2025
Location: African Union Commission, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

African Women in Media (AWiM) is excited to announce that Super Early Bird registration is now open for the AWiM25 Conference, the continent’s leading annual event focused on advancing women’s rights through media development. The 2025 edition will take place on 4–5 December 2025 at the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in strategic partnership with the African Union Commission through the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD) and the Information and Communication Directorate (ICD).

This year’s theme, “Beyond Commitments: Advancing Policies for Gender-Safe Media,” marks a powerful call to move from promises to action. AWiM25 builds on the momentum of the Kigali Declaration on the Elimination of Gender Violence in and through Media in Africa by 2034, aligning with the newly adopted African Union Convention to End Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG).

“We are delighted to partner with AWiM in hosting the AWiM25 conference, whose theme resonates strongly with the African Union Commission’s commitment to addressing violence against women and girls. AWiM25 offers an influential platform to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in and through the media, while also providing a strategic opportunity to rally support for the ratification of the AU-CEVAWG. In addition, this conference allows us to reflect on and find strategies to respond to the ongoing pushback on gender equality.” — Ms. Prudence Nonkululeko Ngwenya, Director, Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate, AUC.

Why Attend AWiM25?

Now in its ninth year, the AWiM Conference gathers over 350 delegates including journalists, academics, civil society organisations, policymakers, tech innovators and investors from across Africa and the Diaspora. AWiM25 will feature:

  • High-level panels on policy, safety, and representation in media
  • Training workshops for media professionals
  • The AWiM Pitch Zone where delegates can pitch to various partners including investment funds and commissioning editors
  • Launches and showcases, including the AWiM 2030 Strategic Vision and Roadmap
  • Opportunities to influence continental gender-media policies
  • Networking with key stakeholders in African media and development

“AWiM25 is a pivotal moment and opportunity to work closely with the AU and Member States in implementing the AU-CEVAWG and the Kigali Declaration. Both documents advocate for the end of gender violence, with the Kigali Declaration focusing on the media ecosystem. The sessions and dialogue will be richer than ever, and we look forward to forming Communities of Practice and Working Groups to implement the recommendations that emerge from the two-day convening at the African Union Commission.” – Dr. Yemisi Akinbobola, Co-Founder and CEO, African Women in Media.
