African women in the Media are facing different challenges ranging from under-representation to being silenced entirely or being paid less despite the increasing number of women in the profession. There is therefore an urgent need to continue to challenge stereotypes through advocacy and capacity building.
Dr Yemisi Akinbobola talked about the huge gap in women’s representation in an exclusive interview with Esther Nwachukwu on the ‘Voice of the People’ VOP radio, 90.3 FM. She explained that gender pay gap, limitations and barriers to progression into certain leadership roles and’ sextortion’ are part of the layers that women in the media have to build resilience against to promote women representation in the media.
When asked if Nigeria is beginning to break the stereotype, she said, “Yes in the sense that we have good examples that we can point to as women in leadership like Mo Abudu and organizations that have a good range of women in different positions. In the sense that our environment is already very patriarchal, it is established in a particular way that it takes time for the change to truly happen”.
