World AIDS Day: Verifying Facts and Myths surrounding Acquired immunodeficiency

Two weeks ago, one of AWIM speakers— Anna Nimiriano, editor in Chief of Juba Monitor— summarized what she and other colleagues talked about concerning the inequality of women in the media in Africa. One of the panelists, Joy Kaguri, a human resource executive from Kenya’s Standard Media Group, now gives a step by step account on how women can negotiate for pay in the media.
Among other things that women can do, Ms Kaguri advises women NOT TO:
• Play the victim of being a woman. Articulate your skills, your worth and performance.
• Blackmail her employer when she gets a job from a rival company.
• Assassinate the characters of her male colleagues as she argues for a salary increment.
• Quit employment without first engaging her manager or supervisor on her lack of satisfaction at the current work place
